Empowering the Next Generation of Nutrition Leaders

The Knoxville Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (KAND) is proud to offer a mentorship program specifically designed for our student members. This program is a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable insights and guidance from experienced Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) who share their professional interests.

Program Overview

  • Duration: The mentorship program runs annually from September through May.
  • Mentorship Matching: Students are carefully matched with an RDN whose expertise aligns with their career goals and interests.
  • Goal: We aim is to provide students with a supportive resource as they navigate their journey as nutrition and dietetics students and future RDNs.

Getting Started

To make the most of your mentorship experience, we encourage mentees to take the initiative in building a relationship with their mentor. Remember, it’s up to you to reach out and establish communication. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

  • Become a Member of KAND: When you join KAND, you’ll have the opportunity to express your interest in the mentorship program directly on the membership form.
  • Schedule a Conversation: Once matched to your RDN mentor, start the conversation. Whether it’s a phone call, a Zoom coffee chat, or an in-person meet-up, make the first move.
  • Connect at KAND Events: Take advantage of in-person KAND meetings and events to catch up with your mentor.
  • Prepare Your Questions: As you progress in your studies, jot down any questions about Supervised Practice Programs (i.e. DIs, GPs, etc) or life as an RDN. These can be excellent discussion points for your next meeting with your mentor.

Tips for a Successful Mentorship Experience

To ensure a fruitful mentorship experience, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be Inquisitive: Always come prepared with questions for your mentor.
  • Take Initiative: Be proactive in reaching out to your mentor to schedule calls or meetings.
  • Show Appreciation: Your mentor is generously offering their time and expertise, so be sure to express your gratitude.

We hope that this mentorship program will be an invaluable resource as you grow and develop in your career. We are excited to support you on your journey to becoming a successful RDN!
