SUMMARY:Milk Safety: From Outbreak Prevention to Patient Treatment
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Knoxville experienced a significant E. coli outbreak related to raw milk consumption. KAND is proud to start our 2018-2019 year with two speakers who will present on the public health and clinical management issues related to milk safety and outbreaks. \nDr. Gina Pighetti is an associate professor of Animal Sciences from UT Knoxville who will discuss dairying and milk safety. Her research aims to improve dairy cow health\, productivity and the safety of milk in our food supply. As part of her presentation\, she will discuss the role of pasteurization in milk safety. Mary Beth Pierce\, a clinical nutrition specialist from East Tennessee Children’s Hospital\, will review clinical treatment considerations when caring for a patient severely affected by an E. coli infection. \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:KAND is excited to offer this coveted opportunity to tour the Sysco facility in Knoxville. Jim Lucas\, an expert in the food safety and quality field\, will be taking us through the facility. He will talk about best practices in food safety\, and he will show us what it takes to provide quality service to the many restaurants\, hotels\, banquet and medical facilities that utilize their food in our area. \nA few notes related to food and personal safety that we must follow to attend the tour:\n\nAll individuals on the tour must wear close-toed shoes that have tread (no high heels or flats without adequate tread)\nBring a coat or pullover. The refrigerated dock is maintained at 38F\, and many of the other areas we will tour will be even colder\nNo personal food or drinks are allowed in the warehouse\, to include gum\, cough drops\, candy\, water bottles\, soda\, etc.\nNo one that is ill or suffering from symptoms of a communicable disease will be allowed to tour the warehouse

I currently live in Memphis\, TN\, with my husband\, Will\, and two wonderful daughters\, Sarah (15) and Emma (13). DESCRIPTION:Morning Journal Club – Study Group \nKAND Journal Club has been in existence for over 40 years\, meeting in members’ homes once a month for 2 hours each from October to May\, except December.  In May\, we decide on topics for the next year and apply for prior approval over the summer.  Participants search for articles on the topic and everyone adds to the discussion.  We use JADA articles\, Mayo Clinic Proceedings\, Nutrition Newsletters (e.g. Tufts)\, NY Times Science Section and ADA information\, plus the internet. \nTopics have included Metabolic Syndrome\, Diabetes—all aspects\, Food Safety\, Cancer Prevention\, Nutrition Guidelines\, Eating Disorders\, Childhood Obesity\, etc. We welcome anyone member who would like to participate. \nChairman: Joan Dow Scott\, M.S.\, LPN \nAttendance & RSVP: 2 CEU’s available per session.
